TEACHING INTERESTS

I regularly teach Introductory Biology (enrollment ~900 students), and I have developed three new undergraduate and graduate marine sciences courses, including a sea-going Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience. I use pedagogical methods that link fundamental science concepts to hands-on activities and real-world examples, allowing students to connect with content, become engaged in the learning process, and find relevance of concepts to their careers and lives. I prioritize maintaining an open and supportive learning environment, in both my classroom and lab, that accommodates various learning styles and promotes collaboration and critical thinking. I mentor undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers, using stage-appropriate strategies to guide their scientific and professional development.

UF Undergraduate Courses

Microbial Life in the Oceans, Semester of Immersion

Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE). Students take part in a multi-day ocean expedition, bench work, and computational analysis to do independent research in microbial oceanography.

Biological Oceanography

Lecture & Discussion elective. Covers fundamental biological oceanography topics and techniques used to quantify biological processes. Students discuss scientific articles and carry out literature-based research projects.

Integrated Principles of Biology

Introductory Biology lecture course. High enrollment (800-1000 students) course that covers core principles of biological life to prepars students for comprehension in advanced biology courses and science in general.

UF Graduate Courses

Microbial Oceanography

Lecture, Discussion, & Project course. Covers fundamental microbial oceanography topics and research techniques. Students analyze ‘omics data using supercomputing to address independent research projects.
