RESEARCH INTERESTS
I conduct original research centered on understanding the metabolic and ecological principles that govern the productivity and biogeochemistry of marine microbial ecosystems. I have interdisciplinary training in molecular microbiology, oceanography, and bioinformatics, and my lab has expertise in the analysis and interpretation of high-throughput sequencing and mass spectrometry-based metabolomics data. I combine molecular and chemical approaches, using both field-based observations of natural populations and laboratory manipulations of model organisms. Characterizing the dynamics microbial interactions over space and time is fundamental to developing a predictive framework for studying marine ecosystem function in current and future ocean conditions. I have published in high-impact multidisciplinary journals (e.g. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA) and leading journals in microbiology (e.g. Nature Microbiology, Nature Reviews Microbiology, mSystems, ISME Journal), chemistry (e.g. Journal of the American Chemical Society), and oceanography (e.g. Limnology & Oceanography).
