TEACHING INTERESTS
Dr. Yang teaches remote sensing, GeoAI, and geospatial data science at the undergraduate and graduate levels. At the University of Florida she teaches GIS 4037/5038C Digital Image Processing and Environmental Remote Sensing and GEO 4938/6938 Advanced Remote Sensing, both built around hands-on labs with Google Earth Engine, Python, and public Earth observation data. Earlier courses include GeoCloud Computing for Remote Sensing, Enterprise GIS Systems, Physical Geography, Extreme Weather, and Geography of Africa.
She has organized and taught workshops on Google Earth Engine, NEON airborne data, digital storytelling with StoryMaps, and AI and machine learning for ranch management, and she leads the EMERGE NASA Data Hackathons that bring students, librarians, and community members together to build tools with NASA and citizen science data. She is lead author of the open textbook Participatory Science and GeoAI (2026) and a Learning Actively Mentoring Program (LAMP) Fellow.
Dr. Yang mentors Ph.D., M.S., and undergraduate researchers whose work has earned national fellowships and best paper and poster awards, and she welcomes students from geography, ecology, computer science, engineering, and public health who want to work at the intersection of AI, Earth observation, and community science.
