Physicist by training, Dr. Teran Arce is interested in the interplay of endothelial cell mechanics, lamellipodia dynamics and cell motility, to analyze how changes of these properties contribute to leakage of interstitial fluid through the endothelial barrier into the airspaces of the lung. To achieve these goals, he uses primarily force microscopy (AFM), optical imaging of live cells and development of new force-measuring methods based on these techniques. Before joining UF Scripps, he also made contributions to amyloid biophysics (University of Arizona, UC San Diego and University of Chicago), force sensor development (UCSD), diatom interaction with fouling release coatings (Montana State University), mechanical properties of ionic crystals (University of Barcelona), and dynamic structures of thiols self-assembled on Au(111) surfaces (National University of La Plata, Argentina).
