Kyla McMullen

Dr. Kyla McMullen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer & Information Science & Engineering at the University of Florida and the director of the SoundPAD Lab, which focuses on the Perception, Application, and Development of 3D audio systems. Her research explores how spatialized sound can enhance user experiences in virtual and augmented reality environments. Through empirical studies, her team has demonstrated that individualized 3D audio significantly reduces localization error and increases engagement in virtual simulations, particularly for users in visually complex or data-dense environments. She integrates these findings into the design of human-centered, multimodal systems with applications ranging from education to assistive technology. In addition to her technical contributions, Dr. McMullen is a national leader in efforts to broaden participation in computing. She co-hosts the Modern Figures podcast and mentors students through programs that elevate Black women and other underrepresented groups in STEM, exemplifying her commitment to equity and inclusive innovation.
