I conduct research in endometriosis and adenomyosis because they are prevalent conditions that are under-recognized and understudied and their painful symptoms are commonly dismissed as “normal” during adolescence. Specifically, my research interests involve the influence of the microbiome and mitochondrial dysfunction in chronic pelvic pain with a focus on endometriosis and adenomyosis. Given the lack of medical treatment options combined with risks of non-treatment that include chronic pelvic pain, kidney failure, bowel obstruction, and infertility, improved diagnostic and preventive measures are urgently needed.
